On December 16, 2014, NOAA officials announced that the World Magnetic Model (WMM), a representation of Earth’s large-scale magnetic field and an indispensable complement to GPS devices used by NATO,  have been updated.

Note: The WMM is the standard navigation model for the U.S. Department of Defense, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, International Hydrographic Organization and consumer electronics. For the last 10 years, NOAA’s National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) in Boulder, Colorado, working with the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh, Scotland, has co-developed the WMM on behalf of the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the United Kingdom’s Defence Geographic Centre. NOAA’s partner, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Studies (CIRES), contributed key science to this project.

What does this mean ? What are the uses for WMM?

Navigation

Approximately 50 species, including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, crustaceans and insects, are known to use the Earth’s magnetic field for orientation and navigation.Humans have used compasses for direction finding since the 11th century A.D. and for navigation since the 12th century. Although the North Magnetic Pole does shift with time, this wandering is slow enough that a simple compass remains useful for navigation. “Since the changes in geomagnetic fields are difficult to predict, timely model updates (every 5 years for the WMM) are required for navigational accuracy.”

Is WMM really an accurate model?

According to NOAA,  WMM is updated  at 5 year intervals, though keep in mind that the WMM and the charts produced come with inherent flaws. Basically, the portions of the geomagnetic field generated by the Earth’s crust and upper mantle, and by the ionosphere and magnetosphere, “are largely unrepresented in the WMM.” Further more scientists admit to errors in the model itself such as the commission error (due to inaccuracies in model coefficients) and the omission error (due to missing contributions to the total geomagnetic field such as crustal and external fields).

Details of the model derivation are described in the NOAA Technical Report: The US/UK World Magnetic Model for 2015-2020 (pdf).

According to NOAA, “Scientists continuously survey the magnetic field and can precisely map the present field and its rate of change and then extrapolate changes into the future. WMM-corrected magnetic compass readings are not subject to ionospheric disturbances and work everywhere, including under the sea and in deep canyons.”

The Earth’s  magnetic North Pole is drifting from northern  Canada towards  Siberia with a presently accelerating rate—10 kilometres (6.2 mi) per year at the beginning of the 20th century, up to 40 kilometres (25 mi) per year in 2003, and since then has only accelerated.

Earth’s magnetic field, which protects the planet from huge blasts of deadly solar radiation, has been weakening over the past six months, according to data collected by a European Space Agency (ESA) satellite array called Swarm.

First and foremost, “Swarm have shown the field is starting to weaken faster than in the past. Previously, researchers estimated the field was weakening about 5 percent per century, but the new data revealed the field is actually weakening at 5 percent per decade, or 10 times faster than thought. As such, rather than the full flip occurring in about 2,000 years, as was predicted, the new data suggest it could happen sooner.”

The scientists who conducted the study are still unsure why the magnetic field is weakening, but  according to  ESA’s mission manager Rune Floberghagen,  one likely reason is that Earth’s magnetic poles are getting ready to flip. SWARM’s  data suggests that  magnetic north is rapidly advancing  towards  Siberia, and he is not the only one. According to scientists, the overall geomagnetic field is becoming weaker; the present strong deterioration corresponds to a 10–15% decline over the last 150 years and has accelerated in the past several years; geomagnetic intensity has declined almost continuously from a maximum 35% above the modern value achieved approximately 2,000 years ago.

Other evidence to support claims of pole shifting occurring

“Despite the initial skepticism, results from this study are very similar to  Klinowska’s theory.  Nine  of the 14 species in the U.S. data display significant to very highly significant associations with the most conservative measures that could be devised, as does the entire data set when pooled. In her most recent paper, Klinowska [1986] reported that this basic association has since been observed in Canada and New Zealand, implying that cetacean live stranding sites are associated with local magnetic anomalies in four widely separate and geologically diverse locations (England, eastern Canada, the United States, and New Zealand). The fundamental question posed by these studies is how the association of strandings with magnetic anomalies arises: Is it fact or artifact? First, and most often suggested, is that it is simply a spurious result of some sort. There is obviously danger inherent in any correlative analysis, yet if used properly, they sometimes reveal important relationships. In the case of the cetacean strandings, it is possible that the animals were guided by some stimulus other than the geomagnetic field. This would be far more interesting than the hypothesized magnetic sense, however, because the other stimulus would have to be correlated in its own right with whatever causes the magnetic anomalies. On the U.S. Atlantic continental margin, most of the source rocks that produce the magnetic anomalies are buried by a blanket of up to 14 km of nonmagnetic sediment. One might still suggest that cetaceans can detect differences in the basement geology through some sort of echo location system (which would require sensitivity on the order of that achieved only recently in seismology), yet the magnetic stranding associations are apparent even in the mysticete whales, which are not known to have echo location abilities.” http://web.gps.caltech.edu/~jkirschvink/pdfs/KirschvinkBEMS89.pdf

According to most scientists surveyed, a polarity flip, or drastic weakening would not be lethal, as demonstrated by the fact that past changes have not been associated with mass extinctions, but could expose power-lines and communication systems to much greater danger. On the positive side, auroras should become more spectacular and widespread. Should such an event occur, most scientists anticipate the timescale will be of the order of millennia.

Conflict in theoretical applications continue to arise, as in the case of  Daily Mail who launched there own investigation and stated:

“Forget global warming, worry about the MAGNETOSPHERE”

The news tabloid went on to say that:

“Earth’s magnetic field is collapsing and it could affect the climate and wipe out power grids .”

Well  this much we already know to be true, and scientists have warned of power and communication technology  grids  in the event of a pole shift as well as a solar storm such as the well documented  solar storm of 1859, also known as the Carrington event which  recorded  a powerful  geomagnetic solar storm  in 1859 {which occurred}   during  what is known as Solar Cycle 10.  A solar  coronal  mass ejection hit Earth’s magnetosphere  and induced one of the largest geomagnetic storms on record. The associated “white light flare” in the solar photoshere was observed and recorded by English astronomers Richard C. Carrington and Richard Hodgson.

Earth’s climate could also change. A recent Danish study has found that the earth’s weather has been significantly affected by the planet’s magnetic field.

Studies have shown that a solar storm of this magnitude occurring today would likely cause widespread problems for modern civilization. The solar storm of 2012 was of similar magnitude, but it passed Earth’s orbit without striking the Earth.

‘This is serious business’, Richard Holme, Professor of Earth, Ocean and Ecological Sciences at Liverpool University told MailOnline. ‘Imagine for a moment your electrical power supply was knocked out for a few months – very little works without electricity these days.’

The Earth’s climate would change drastically, and we have  already experienced catastrophic storms in the past decade to draw it’s own conclusions: Global  weather is unstable.. In fact, a recent Danish study believes global warming is directly related to the magnetic field rather than CO2 emissions. Another strong possibility.

Effects

FACT:  Birds primarily use a static (DC) magnetic field for orientation, but recent investigations indicate that weak alternating (AC) magnetic fields with extremely low frequency (ELF) may have hazardous health effects. Such reports are often received with skepticism, because the effects usually involve magnetic energies that are less than the kT energy. However, some of the in vitro studies yield experimental results that are too significant to be ignored. Here, we propose an argument to explain why low-level magnetic fields can be detected without being overshadowed by thermal noises. Relevance of biomagnetic research to the development of biosensors and novel computational paradigms is also discussed.

FACT:  Researchers predict that in the event of a flip, every year a hundred thousand people would die from the increased levels of space radiation. ‘Radiation could be 3-5 times greater than that from the man-made ozone holes. Furthermore, the ozone holes would be larger and longer-lived,’ said Dr Colin Forsyth from the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at UCL.
