What is the difference between Fluoride used in public water treatment facilities and common fluoride treatments used by your dentist?

Let’s have a look because thus far, I cannot find the difference, although my own dentist claimed that the fluoride  they use in treatments of their patients is different than fluoride used in water treatment plants. I have found no evidence of this. The fact is, I found more medical websites promoting the use of Fluoride treatments than any other source of public  information.Does this mean that it’s safe?

What is Fluoride? Is it a chemical or is it naturally occurring in nature and if so, is it good or bad?

According to many sources including medical journals, fluoride is a naturally occurring substance found in soil, water, foods, and several minerals, such as Fluor apatite and fluorite. It is the 13th most abundant element on the earth’s crust, as well a chemical ion of the element fluorine – fluoride has one extra electron that gives it a negative charge. Fluoride concentration in seawater averages 1.3 ppm (parts per million), while in fresh water supplies the natural range is typically between 0.01 to 0.3 ppm. In some parts of the world, fresh water contains fluoride levels which are dangerous and can lead to health problems.

Fluoride is also synthesized in laboratories. Synthesized fluoride is commonly added to drinking water, toothpaste, mouthwashes and various chemical products. But is it safe?

Fluoride in Water Treatment:

“The main chemicals used to fluoridate drinking water are known as “silicofluorides” (i.e., hydrofluorosilicic acid and sodium fluorosilicate). Silicofluorides are not pharmaceutical-grade fluoride products; they are unprocessed industrial by-products of the phosphate fertilizer industry. Since these silicofluorides undergo no purification procedures, they can contain elevated levels of arsenic — moreso than any other water treatment chemical. In addition, recent research suggests that the addition of silicofluorides to water is a risk factor for elevated lead exposure, particularly among residents who live in homes with old pipes.” (http://fluoridealert.org/faq/)

Talk Show host and author Jesse Ventura expressed his concerns TO THE PUBLIC  regarding Fluoride in the water.

“We’re forever incorporating Nazi things into our lives. Fluoride in the water, that was originally done by the Nazis! I don’t particularly like anything the Nazis did too much, and they were the first ones to put fluoride in the water. They tell us, ‘Oh, it’s for your teeth’ and all that — well, isn’t that your parents’ job, to teach you how to brush your teeth and use mouthwash? Why do you need the government putting some type of chemical in your water? I don’t know if you know this [but] fluoride is the main component of Prozac! What you’ve got is people drinking Prozac-water. Well, what does Prozac do to you? It calms you and dumbs you down so you’re less emotional. There’s a reason for all that stuff; what do we need fluoride in our water for? There’s no reason whatsoever to put chemicals in our water.”

Is there any truth to this?

Charles Eliot Perkins, who at the end of World War II purportedly learned from a big German chemical producer that it had developed a plan to fluoridate occupied countries does not advocate for Fluoride use and vehemently warns against its use.

“Repeated doses of infinitesimal amounts of fluoride will in time reduce an individual’s power to resist domination by slowly poisoning and narcotizing a certain area of the brain and will thus make him submissive to the will of those who wish to govern him,” says a document quoted in the excerpt. “Both the Germans and the Russians added sodium fluoride to the drinking water of prisoners of war to make them stupid and docile.”

There are many conspiracies as well as urban myths surrounding the Fluoride discussion, including our own history that suggests the USA first began fluoridating water with the first large-scale fluoridation in history, not in Europe, but in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1945.

June 24, 2012, Natural News reported that fluoridation has indeed begun in the USA back in 1945.

The report claims that “The year before water fluoridation began in the United States; the entire dental profession recognized that fluoride was detrimental to dental health. In fact, in 1944 the Journal of the American Dental Association reported that using between 1.6 and 4 ppm (parts per million) fluoride in water would cause 50% of adults to need false teeth. On top of that, the world’s largest study looked at 400,000 students, revealing that tooth decay increased in over 25% with just 1ppm fluoride in drinking water. (http://www.healthy-communications.com)

Yet still, in 1945, fluoride was put into municipal water systems in Newburgh, New York, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. Over the next 50 years, more than 60 percent of the U.S. population was “fluoridated” at a minimum of 1 ppm. Currently, over 75% of the United States water supply contains this deadly toxin.

One part of the hoax, “fluoride helps with tooth formation,” was removed from the “American Fluoride Campaign” early on. Realizing this might expose the entire campaign as fraudulent, the FDA and CDC simply removed that language, but kept the masses believing that fluoride keeps dental cavities at bay.

Over 70% of America still clings to the multi-faceted myth.”

According to medical journals: “Fluoride is not the “main ingredient” in Prozac. The active ingredient in Prozac is Fluoxetine, not fluoride. Fluoxetine is comprised of five different elements. Fluoride is only one of those elements. Oxygen and nitrogen are two others that make up Fluoxetine. Should the fact that oxygen is an ingredient in Prozac lead someone to fear oxygen and avoid inhaling it? Anyone who stopped consuming oxygen would soon be dead. Now there’s a health risk worth worrying about. Of course, research shows that anyone who stopped consuming fluoridated water would raise his or her odds of tooth decay.”

An interesting caveat is that if you look up the trade name for Fluoxetine, you come up with the name Prozac along with hundreds of other trade names for anti-depressants. I must say it is alarming, check it for yourself here.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluoxetine#Other_names

On a more personal note, I have too been advised {on several occasions} by my own local to dentist to not only use fluoride toothpaste, but he suggested I begin fluoride treatments. I asked him if it was safe and he stated that “Yes it is not only safe, but it aids in the prevention of tooth decay as well as tooth sensitivity.” He went on to say that “We sue it with children during their checkups, and it helps to reduce pain during cleanings.” I asked my Oral Hygienist the same question, and she as well encouraged me to use the fluoride treatments for the same suggested reasons as my dentist.  When I asked “Lisa” if this was considered safe, she replied “Absolutely! I have seen improvements with both the young and the elderly and I highly recommend fluoride treatments.”

The irony is that Fluoride has been linked to the cause of gum disease, according to an article published in the Indian Journal of Dental Research.

At the very least, it is a confusing topic.

What do health authorities and medical associations say about fluoridation? The use of adding fluoride to drinking water – water fluoridation – is endorsed by the WHO (World Health Organization), AMA (American Medical Association), BDA (British Dental Association), and the ADA (American Dental Association).

According to the American Dental Association’s web page titled “ADA Fluoridation Policy & Statements”:

“The American Dental Association unreservedly endorses the fluoridation of community water supplies as safe, effective and necessary in preventing tooth decay. This support has been the Association’s position since policy was first adopted in 1950.”

The ADA says that fluoridation of community water supplies is only an adjustment of the naturally-occurring fluoride levels in drinking water to an ideal level recommended by the US Public Health Service – 0.7 to 1.2 parts per million. The aim being to prevent tooth decay. The ADA says that “water that has been fortified with fluoride is similar to fortifying milk with Vitamin D, table salt with iodine, and bread and cereals with folic acid”.

The National Health Service (NHS), UK, quoted a UK study which compared levels of tooth decay among very young children in areas where drinking water was not fluoridated to those living in areas where fluoridation occurred. The researchers found that there was 60% less tooth decay among the children living in the fluoridated water areas.

According to Health Canada “The optimal concentration of fluoride in drinking water for dental health has been determined to be 0.7 mg/L for communities who wish to fluoridate. This concentration provides optimal dental health benefits and is well below the MAC to protect against adverse effects.”

Canadian Dental Association President Dr. Ron G. Smith described water fluoridation as one of the greatest preventative measure we have in the fight against dental decay. “There is clear evidence that fluoride helps natural tooth enamel remineralize and jurisdictions around the world support water fluoridation, as do we. It is important that everyone understands the facts and the benefits of fluoride.”

The Australian Department of Health and Ageing confirmed that according to the most up-to-date evidence, fluoride in the water system is safe and effective for people of all ages.

Ironically, the well-known organization UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund created in 1946 to help children in war-torn Europe, China and the Middle East) is not an advocate for fluoride treatments. Keep in mind UNICEFF is also one of the leaders in immunization, another controversy all together. UNICEF publically claims that “Fluorosis (caused by an over exposure to Fluoride) is endemic in at least 25 countries. The number of people suffering from skeletal fluorosis globally is thought to be in the tens of millions. WHO (The World Health Organization)  estimates that 2.7 million people in China have the crippling form of the disease.

UNICEF made a public statement in 2014 that read :

“It has long been known that excessive fluoride intake carries serious toxic effects. But scientists are now debating whether fluoride confers any benefit at all.”

DeFluoridation  and UNICEF

UNICEF has worked closely with the Government and other partners in defluoridation programmes in India, where excessive fluoride has been known for many years to exist in much of the nation’s groundwater. In the 1980s, UNICEF supported the Government’s Technology Mission in the effort to identify and address the fluoride problem: the Government subsequently launched a massive programme, still under way, to provide fluoride-safe water in all the areas affected.

This is pretty alarming.

USA

Water is fluoridated in 29 of the 30 largest cities in the USA. The exception is Portland, Ore. For the fourth time since 1956, Portland voter defeated a plan on May 21, 2014 to add fluoride to the public water supply. The USA claims that Fluoride in the water has dramatically decreased tooth decay.  In most of the countries in Europe which do not have water fluoridation did not find that their incidences of dental cavities increased. In Germany and Finland, for example, decay rates either remained stable or continued in their downward trend after they stopped adding fluoride to their drinking water.

The down side of Fluoride:

Excess fluoride exposure

Excess fluoride exposure may come from the following sources:

  • Public water fluoridation
  • Abnormally high concentrations of fluoride in natural fresh water
  • Dentifrice/fluoridated mouth rinse. Young children may swallow it.
  • Untested bottled water
  • Inappropriate use of fluoride supplements
  • Some foods

Dental Fluorosis as a result of excess Fluoride Exposure

Excessive exposure to high concentrations of fluoride during tooth development (during childhood) can result in tiny white streaks or specks in the enamel of the tooth in mild cases of dental fluorosis. In severe cases of dental fluorosis, the tooth has more evident discoloration and brown markings. The enamel may be rough and pitted, and difficult to clean. Other effects can lead to skeletal fluorosis, damage to the Thyroid Gland, damage to joints, less elastic bones, which increases the risk of bone fractures.

Solutions:

If you live in a community that fluoridates its water supply, here are some solutions if you indeed you have DECIDED TO opt  out of Fluoride consumption. The following are the recorded fluoride levels in several popular bottled water brands sold in the United States. If the bottled water  brand that you purchase is not included on this list, you can find out the fluoride level by calling the company, as this is information they should have readily available. Please see our article entitled  HOW TO GET THE FLUORIDE OUT OF YOUR DRINKING WATER

One thought on “Fluoride in your water & at the dentist; Is there a difference?”
  1. I was born in 1954 – they started in Winnipeg in 1956. our generation totally changed society – it was epic, from virgins till married to – sex revolution and up to 60% of kids single parent homes. I would say we were most definitely programmed by media and lost intelligence which is the result of the intensity of the emotion attached to the experience.

Like the current news that we can eat butter and indeed should even eat more meat – a clever programming by corporate meat producers. People are more aware of animal suffering – but since they cannot get emotional enough to question their practices they just obey.

Of course there is natural fluorine but we no longer get it – or Vit D or Vit B’s from working and eating directly from the soil – B’s make us easier to use Trauma Based Mind Control on and D’s make us sicker and ……..

My grandmother never drank fluoridated water and died in 2000 at 98 – with a full set of teeth and one gold filling.

The fluoride in India – was it industrial source or naturally occurring and they have no where left to go?

Also present in juices and pops! I even consider that most foods somewhere along the processing line are washed – in fluoridated water.

    Great article!!!
